Is shared hosting the right choice for your site?

Shared hosting means your website sits on a server alongside other websites, all drawing on the same processor, memory and disk. That sharing is exactly what makes it affordable. A server that would cost tens of thousands of shillings a month to run on your own is split between many customers, so your share starts at KSh 80 a month.

For most Kenyan websites this is the correct choice rather than a compromise. A business brochure site, a school or church website, a portfolio, a blog, a WordPress site with a few thousand visitors a month, a small online shop: all of these run comfortably on shared hosting and would gain nothing from something bigger.

There are jobs it is genuinely not suited to. If you need root access or software installed at system level, if your application needs guaranteed processor and memory rather than a fair share of it, or if you are running sustained heavy traffic against a large database, then you have outgrown it. In that case a VPS is the honest answer and we would rather tell you that than sell you a plan that will struggle.

Which of the three plans do you need?

The figure that usually decides it is not storage. Most small sites never come close to filling even the smallest plan. What decides it is how many separate websites you want to run, because each one needs its own slot on the account.

• Starter, KSh 80 a month or KSh 899 a year: 5GB of SSD storage and one website. Right for a single business site, blog or portfolio.
• Business, KSh 120 a month or KSh 1,450 a year: 10GB of SSD storage and 2 websites. Right if you run a second site, a staging copy or a project on the side.
• Professional, KSh 250 a month or KSh 2,900 a year: 50GB of SSD storage and 5 websites. Right for an agency, a reseller of your own services, or anyone managing several client sites in one place.

If you are unsure, start on the smallest plan. Upgrading takes a moment from your dashboard, you pay only the difference for the time remaining, and nothing has to be moved or rebuilt. It costs you nothing to start small and it is the cheaper mistake to make.

What actually runs your website

Every plan, including the cheapest one, runs on the same platform. There is no slower tier for people paying less.

• LiteSpeed web server. It handles PHP considerably faster than Apache under the same load, which is most of why a WordPress site feels quick here.
• SSD storage throughout. No mechanical disks anywhere in the platform.
• DirectAdmin control panel. Files, databases, email, subdomains, DNS records and one click installers for WordPress and other applications.
• PHP 5.6 through 8.3, switchable per site. This matters more than it sounds. If you have an older application that has not been updated, you can keep it on the version it needs instead of it breaking on upgrade day.
• Free SSL that renews itself. Certificates are issued and renewed automatically, so the padlock does not quietly expire on you.
• Daily backups, kept for seven days. Taken automatically, and we can restore from them if something goes wrong.

Paying for hosting from Kenya

Everything is priced and billed in Kenyan Shillings. There is no card requirement, no currency conversion and no bill that quietly grows when the exchange rate moves, which is the usual complaint about paying an overseas host.

You pay with M-Pesa. Checkout sends an STK push to your phone, you enter your PIN, and your account is set up automatically within about five minutes of the payment clearing. You do not need to email anyone a screenshot or wait for an office to open. If you would rather pay by bank transfer, that can be arranged, and there is a seven day money back guarantee if it turns out not to suit you.

Moving a site you already have

Migration is free and we do the work. Open a ticket once you have a plan and we copy the files, the databases and the email accounts across, then set it up so you can check the site here before anything changes publicly.

Only when you are satisfied do you point your domain at us. Done in that order the switch is invisible to your visitors, because the new copy is already serving before the domain moves. You keep your existing domain wherever it is registered if you prefer; it does not have to move with the hosting.

Uptime we publish, rather than promise

Most hosting pages print 99.9% and never show you a number to back it. We test every service continuously and publish what comes back, including the bad days. Over the last 30 days that measurement was 99.64% across 388,647 checks.
