Can an online shop really run on shared hosting?

For most Kenyan shops, yes, and comfortably. A WooCommerce store with a few hundred products and a steady flow of orders is well within what a shared plan handles. Plenty of shops are talked into far more than they need.

What actually decides it is not how many products you list, it is how many people are doing something expensive at the same moment. Browsing is cheap because it can be cached. Checkout, search and the cart cannot be cached, because every one of them is personal to that shopper.

The honest signals that you have outgrown a shared plan:

  • You regularly have more than a handful of people at checkout simultaneously, not just on the site.
  • Your catalogue runs to thousands of products with variants, so the admin screens have become slow to use.
  • You are running promotions that bring a month of traffic in an afternoon.
  • You have added so many plugins that the site is slow even when it is quiet.

If two or more of those describe you, a VPS is the right move and we will say so. If none of them do, a shared plan is not a compromise and you should keep the difference.

Getting paid, and the two things that lose sales

Kenyan shoppers expect M-Pesa. A store that only offers card payment will lose orders from people who have the money and simply do not want to type card details into a shop they have not bought from before. We build M-Pesa checkout integration if you need it.

The other two are quieter. An SSL certificate is not optional for a shop: browsers mark a checkout page without one as not secure, and shoppers do abandon at that screen. Page views are cached and handled comfortably. The part that does the work is checkout, which cannot be cached. If you are planning something large, tell us beforehand and we will look at the shop with you rather than find out afterwards. Moving up a plan for a busy month and back down again is straightforward.
