Recommended for Freelancers

The cheapest plan handles a single portfolio comfortably.

The email address is doing more work than the website

Most freelancers build the portfolio first and think about email later. It is usually the wrong way round. A prospective client sees your address before they see your work, on the proposal, the invoice and the first reply, and an address at your own domain reads differently from a free one.

It is not about looking corporate. It is that [email protected] tells a client you have been doing this long enough to set something up, that you are contactable at an address that will still work next year, and that your business is separate from your personal life. A quote from a Gmail address competes on price. The same quote from your own domain competes on credibility.

It is also practical. You keep the address when you change email provider, you can add hello@ or accounts@ later without telling anyone a new address, and you can hand a project address to a collaborator without giving away your personal inbox.

Hosting your own site and your clients sites together

If you build sites for other people, the number of websites your plan allows matters more than its storage. Each client site needs its own slot, so the jump from one plan to the next is usually about client count rather than disk space.

Two things worth deciding early. Keep each client on their own domain and their own database, even when they share your account, so that handing one over later is a clean operation rather than an untangling. And be clear from the start about whose name the domain is registered in. Registering a client domain in your own name is convenient at the time and becomes a difficult conversation the day they want to leave.

If you reach the point where you are billing clients for hosting and want it under your own brand and your own nameservers, that is reseller hosting rather than a larger shared plan. Talk to us about it when you get there.

Freelancer Hosting FAQ

Anyone can have a Linktree or Instagram bio. A real website at yourname.co.ke tells clients you take this seriously. It also lets you control SEO, capture leads, and look the part on Upwork/Fiverr profiles.

Depends on the plan. The Starter shared plan covers 1 domain — perfect for a single portfolio. Larger shared plans allow 5–20 domains, ideal if you run a few side projects (or host small client sites as part of your service).

Yes — every plan includes mail like [email protected] on day one. Webmail works in any browser; you can also connect Gmail/Outlook via IMAP.

Hostiko is fully SEO-friendly: free SSL, fast LiteSpeed servers, indexable URLs, structured data support. Whether you rank for your name in Kenya is then a matter of content and backlinks — but the technical side is sorted.

Upgrade in one click from the client dashboard. Move up to a bigger shared plan, or to VPS if you start hosting client sites. The price difference is prorated.

Yes. Monthly M-Pesa billing is built in, no card needed. You get a reminder + STK push when renewal is due. Or pay annually for a 16% saving.

Free portfolio sites are fine for showing work and poor at everything else. You cannot have email on your own name, you cannot move the address if the platform changes its terms, and the platform brands the page rather than you. A domain plus a small hosting plan costs less per year than a couple of hours of your own time.

Yes, up to the number of websites your plan allows. Each client needs their own domain, and it is worth giving each their own database too so that handing the site over later is straightforward. Choose the plan by how many client sites you expect rather than by storage.

It moves, and we will help rather than make it difficult. Their files and database are theirs. This goes far more smoothly if the domain was registered in the client name from the beginning, so we would encourage that even though it is slightly less convenient for you.

Use .co.ke if your clients are Kenyan, because it tells them where you are and Kenyan buyers trust it. Use .com if you work mainly for clients abroad. Plenty of freelancers register both and point one at the other. .co.ke is KSh 1,200 to register and KSh 1,700 a year to renew.

Yes, that is the main reason to do this. You create mailboxes on your own domain in the control panel and read them in webmail or in the mail app on your phone, exactly as you do now. Setting up the first one takes a few minutes.

That is reseller hosting rather than a bigger shared plan: your own branded nameservers and your own billing. It is a different product and we are happy to talk it through, including whether it is worth it at the number of clients you currently have.
